Facing the Shadows That Drain Our Energy — A Soulful Take on the “Spooky Season”

Spooky season is coming to its height as Halloween is almost here, and while the world dresses up in ghosts and cobwebs, I can’t help but think about the real things that haunt us.
Every October, the world turns its attention to what’s spooky such as ghosts, shadows, and things that go bump in the night. But beneath the costumes and candy, the season can hold a deeper invitation: to face what’s been haunting us, and to reclaim the power that fear once held.
As I meet more and more people just like you, I often hear the quieter “hauntings” that follow helpers, healers, and leaders. Not the kind that live under the bed, but the ones that live quietly in our minds and hearts:
The fear of not doing enough.
The guilt of resting when others still need you.
The doubt that whispers, Who am I to lead or heal?
The voice that says we’re falling behind.
The old patterns that keep us over-giving or over-functioning long after we’ve outgrown them.
These “hauntings” show up often for helpers, healers, and heart-led leaders. They’re the energetic residue of compassion fatigue, self-neglect, and internalized pressure to always be okay. But here’s the truth: when we meet our shadows with compassion instead of avoidance, transformation begins. The same way the dark of night allows us to see the stars, our discomfort can illuminate where our soul is ready for growth.
This time of year invites us into the sacred practice of meeting the parts of ourselves we’ve pushed away with compassion, not shame. It’s an opportunity to listen to what your soul is trying to show you through discomfort. The “shadow” isn’t bad; it’s simply the part of you asking to be integrated and loved.
This season also highlights the importance of nervous system regulation and energetic boundaries. The more awareness you bring to your internal cues of tension, fatigue, dread, the more power you have to choose differently. Wholeness begins when you notice what’s off and honor your body’s call for rest or recalibration.
This season, try these gentle reflection prompts:
What’s been haunting me lately and what might it be trying to teach me?
Where have I been dimming my own light out of fear or exhaustion?
What would it look like to reclaim my energy and authority from what drains me?
This “spooky season” isn’t really about fear but it’s about illumination. It’s about shining light on what’s been quietly running the show so you can reclaim your energy, your voice, and your peace. This month, may you find courage to unmask your old stories, release what no longer serves you, and reconnect with your light.
If you’ve been feeling the weight of what’s haunting you, whether it be old roles, patterns, or exhaustion, I’d love to help you move through it with gentleness and clarity.
